I hope you enjoyed the title alluding to the title of near to every single fantasy novel ever…
Ask 90% of readers what their favourite genre is – me included – and they will say: fantasy. Fictional world surrounded by the most gorgeous architecture, magical schools teaching precarious spells and a main character witch. I am guilty myself, the main character and plot of my novel fitting into this exact summary. But, why?
I mean isn’t it obvious? The whole world, our world, is a wreck. International trade wars, warfare between countries being globalised and the rise of fascism removing rights for literal HUMAN BEINGS! An escapism is what we need and long for.
And those who do it best? I mean, just ask Suzanne Collins. Whilst it is more dystopian and not fantasy, the world keeps inching closer to all these scary, fantastical ideas coming true. Award shows, the elite of the elite, the Met Gala and so many more events are all include that exclusive phrase: invite-only. Welcome citizens, the rise of the Capitol is at play…
It’s reminiscent of the rise of crime writing post-WWII. There, we saw the likes of Agatha Christie and elements of the ‘cosy-crimes’. People wanted that excitement of murder, investigations and criminals – but with the simple solution to wrap it all up at the end. You’re telling me that corrupt political leaders and multiple wars aren’t reminiscent of our world? But it’s okay, because there’s always a happy ending, rebuilt kingdom and resolves woes – sound familiar?
I do think trends in Literature are very reminiscent of our own society, as escapism more than often carries a ring of truth in it all. But, for now, I guess we wait and see to what genre will take over our world next…
