I always find it interesting when people discuss and debate the development of creative skills. They say, ‘you’re either born with it or you’re not’ or ‘just not good enough’ and I don’t believe that’s true. From somebody doing a degree in Creative Writing I am working on my skills every day, and when I think I’m at my peak I look back a few months down the line and just realise how wrong I was.
So, say you decide to join the gym after wanting to for a while and upon getting there you’re not that great, you can only manage two push ups. So, you go back, you train every day and you get to twenty. You don’t stop or you’ll lose all the strength you’ve worked hard for. You carry on, and suddenly you can do thirty, fifty and so on.
It’s the same when it comes to creative skills. Just because you can’t paint or write doesn’t mean you’ll never be able to. But also, it doesn’t mean there isn’t room for improvement. As an artist, you’re constantly adapting, changing and becoming something new. I believe it’s a myth that some people can’t be good at what they create.
