Upon reading reviews, a lot of people didn’t seem to like the slow, repetitive pace of the novel. But, I thought that made it perfect. You’ve got to remember, we’re watching the narrative unfold from the perspective of a little girl – this is her life.
Stray, eat, school, mama. That’s all this little girl knows. Her life is so isolated that there’s nothing to tell at the start.
The way the novel unfolds is BEAUTIFUL. Not only the story but the as this little girl grows, so does her morals and views of life.
Nothing quite goes into too much depth. Everything is surface level, which is quite refreshing. The story is the story for sakes of being one, not to uncover anything – like the side-story of the queer storylines. It’s realistic, and it’s raw (literally).
The violence and gore of the novel is very well written by Rose. As a person new to gore, I did have to take some breaks just before eating after reading this!!! You can see how every action and stray moulds the characters and drives the story.
A different, beautiful and raw novel encased in blood and flesh.
