Disgustingly beautiful and cleverly told.
Before I get into this review, this books covers many sexual assault stories and it should be noted that if this is a trigger, you should not read this novel. Whilst this doesn’t directly occur in the story, it is mentioned a lot throughout.
To be honest, I did read this book about two-ish years ago and was unsure how I felt about the story and the way it was told. I hadn’t read in a while (courtesy of my degree forcing me to read endless other books) and was extremely new to the horror scene. Now I’ve re-read it, and re-entered this magical world it is just so amazing!
I often question how many times you can tell a story again and again and again, but Henry does it in a way where everything feels new again. Even though it is set in a different world, Alice almost feels more real than she’s ever felt before. As magical as wonderland always is in other retellings, this story fills in those fantastical plot holes and leaves you shocked at every corner of the Old City.
The flashbacks are my FAVOURITE, the storytelling crafted so well that I feel crazy with Alice and Hatcher, as well as the little droplets of memories that we learn alongside these characters. LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!!
(p.s. I have bought the WHOLE fairytale series so cannot wait for more Henry reviews)
