The use of real life history is something I LOVE. Upon researching the actual events the book is based on, it simply made me admire Stacey Halls even more. This novel almost slots itself in the 17th century.
However – and this is a big however – the characters are very two-dimensional. I felt a little disappointed at how little character depth there was. I read the book and I am physically there, but there’s no people. It’s a huge let down for a book which would otherwise be one of my favourites. I didn’t feel like I was rooting for anybody, seething or sympathising over another.
I give Halls some credit, as a debut novel this is very good, just not great. I look forward to trying out another one of her latter novels, to see if can immerse myself more in these characters.
