This novella was such a beautiful way to start my morning, enriched in the ordinary, cold and brave people who are the true heroes of battles.
I adored the simplicity of this story, reading it almost as a diary as we follow an average man doing his job and providing for his family. He is happy enough but is clearly stuck, longing for something he may never reach. But, even in the midst of all his personal issues and odd family dynamic, he is courageous in an unspoken war.
Keegan produced something special with this novella, as I simply read it this morning as the day continues it hits me more and more how cleverly crafted and astonishingly brilliant this is. However, I had to rate is four stars as I felt most of the description was set in the past, following only what had happened over the first few pages, and not what is currently taking place. I did understand why this was done, and found it relevant to the plot, but I yearned for a little more hard-hitting backstory and perhaps delving more into other members of his family – instead of repeated yearns from our protagonist.
Overall a novella I loved so dearly and will definitely explore her other works in the future…
