THE most heartbreaking novel I have ever read…
As stated in the afterword, I’m not surprised this story has grown in popularity reflecting the dystopian world today. The exploration of relationships, thought and human-connection down to the deepest, most complicated level is utterly fascinating.
The way Harpman manages to write in such a way that you really do carry hope until the very end, with the child herself, despite how little every other character believed in devastating. This novella is a dystopian not for sake, but because it’s real and raw and like nothing else I have ever read.
When we have nothing, what do we do? With little knowledge of the world prior, do we simply carry on or change our ways? Harpman explores what is humanity and what makes us human in the face of nothing. Do we maintain our modesty, do we bury our friends? How long do we simply carry on until we realise there’s nothing and no change in our life?
I intend to recommend this book for every single person in my life to read as I just simply think it’s one of the most underrated and important stories we need to consume.
