Another truly bizarre and weird but wonderful read from the fantastical mind of Patrick Ness.
I went to an event not so long ago on his newest novel, Piper at the Gates of Dusk, and I knew I had to immerse myself back into his writing – and so picked this novel on the basis as he mentioned it so much during the talk! So I walked into this one blind, a little confused, but what beauty it was to watch this story unfold in front of me.
The dual POV was so fascinating, following Adam’s heartbreaking tale filled with love, loss and release from a life he’s always been subjected to live. Navigating love is one task in itself, but doing so alone without his parent’s acceptance as the gay son of a preacher is so tough to read.
As a ghost / mysterious entity arises from the lake, the weird but wonderful tale doesn’t let itself open to much. It’s tough to understand the parallels until you read further and further and realise the question: how important are things in a little life with the whole world at stake???
